2002 NECBL quarterfinals
TORRINGTON, Aug. 9, 2002 -- This was a team that teased --  a team that was better in the mind that in reality. It was a team that could never live up to its potential because it was never together.

The 2002 edition of the Torrington Twisters was the ultimate sandlot baseball team. Thanks to crucial injuries, some unfortunate problems with players' families and some lack of commitment, the Twisters played the 2002 NECBL season on the fly but still posted a winning season and earned a playoff berth.

NECBL championship series
Game 2: Newport 3, Keene 2
NEWPORT, R.I., Aug. 10, 2002 -- Series MVP Vita Chiaravalloti hit a eighth-inning home run to lift the Gulls to a 3-2 victory over Keene and a second straight NECBL championship at Cardines Field. Chiaravalloti hit .348 in the postseason with four home runs, 11 RBI and a .913 slugging percentage. Newport hurler Michael Bergeron went the distance, scattering four hits and striking out eight as the Gulls swept the Swamp Bats.

Udy earns All-NECBL honors
Catcher Wick Udy earned a spot on the 2002 All-NECBL second team. Udy hit .256 with 24 hits, 21 walks, six doubles and 11 RBI.

Keene sets new win record
KEENE, N.H., July 31, 2002 --  The Swamp Bats set a new single-season record for most wins with a 5-3 win over Lowell Wednesday. Keene finished the season with a record of 31-11, topping by one game the record set by Torrington in 1998 of 30-12. For the second straight year, Keene atttraced over 40,000 fans.

The distinctiveness of Twister catcher Wick Udy goes beyond his unique name. Like his teammates, Udy is chasing a possible career in professional baseball. But he is also playing for the future of his family. His wife, Kassi, is home in Utah six months pregnant with their first child, a little girl, due in October. The perspective gained during a two-year Mormon mission in Detroit from 1998-2000 has helped his baseball career, he said.
