Major Division
Gm. 3: No. Stamford 8, Guilford 3
THOMASTON, July 30 -- North Stamford exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to top Guilford to win the Connecticut Major Division (ages 11-12) Little League state championship at Reeves Field. North Stamford won the best-of-3 series, 2-1.

North Branford took an early 3-0 in the second inning on RBI single from Pat Green and pitcher T.J. Hickey and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Weir that scored Sean Mullins. Guilford closed the gap in the third inning thanks a two-run home run from Dustin Miconi. But Hickey, who allowed five hits and fanned six, handcuffed Guilford for the remainder of the game. In the pivotal fifth inning, Mullins had a two-run double while Hickey (3-for-3) had a run-scoring single for North Stamford. Green and J.J. Descrescenzo also had RBIs in the inning.

"(North Stamford) made the plays and got it done in the fifth. I'm hoping to be able to get up to Bristol to cheer our state champions on," Guilford coach Mark Donovan told the
New Haven Register.

Gm. 2: Guilford 10, North Stamford 3
THOMASTON, July 29 -- Guilford pitcher Mike Pavelko allowed only five hits, one earned runs and fanned eight as Guilford tied up the series at 1-1. Pavelko shut down an explosive North Stamford offense with his consistent mix of hard fastballs and an occasional change-up.

Pavelko had an RBI single while Dennis McGinley added a two-run double to give Guilford an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. North Stamford cut the lead to 3-1 on a run-scoring double by Brandon Weir in the bottom of the first. It tied the game in the fourth when T.J. Hickey scored on a passed ball and a Tom Dolan single scored pinch runner Rich Pucci.

Guilford, however, rallied for six runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Pavelko and a bases-loaded double by Steve Hall. Hall also singled to score Pavelko in the sixth for Guilford's final run.

Gm. 1: No. Stamford 10, Guilford 0 (5)
THOMASTON, July 27 -- T.J. Hickey hit a first-inning two-run home run and Bobby Horn pitched a three-hitter as North Stamford won 10-0 in five innings at Reeves Field in game 1. Guilford was clearly outplayed as North Stamford banged out 11 hits. It also was put in an unfamiliar situation, trailing early. Hickey's two-run shot in the first inning put North Stamford up 2-0. They got a run in the second on a run-scoring single by J.J. Decrescenzo and two more in the third to lead 5-0. Sean Mullins hit a two-run single and Horn added a run-scoring single as part of a five-run fifth inning.

Junior Division
Final: Norwich 5, South Windsor 4
SOUTH WINDSOR, July 27 -- Norwich erased a four-run deficit with a two-out rally in the fifth inning as Norwich won the state Junior baseball championship for the third time in four years with a 5-4 win over South Windsor. "We just pulled the rabbit out of the hat again," Norwich manager Don Murray told the Norwich Bulletin. South Windsor led 4-0 after three innings and 4-1 in the fifth. In the first game of the tournament, South Windsor led 7-0 before Norwich rallied to eventually win, 8-7 in eight innings.

Norwich cut the lead to 4-1 in the fourth when Tyler Turgeon hit one of his three doubles, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Danny Eagan. In the fifth inning, South Windsor should have been out of the inning but Chris Blanchard reached first base on an error. Josh Murray followed with a single to center, Turgeon hit an RBI double and Corey Corcoran had an RBI single. Turgeon scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Kyle Wilson grounded to second base but there was an error and Corcoran scored from second base, beating the second basesman's throw home by sliding around the catcher's tag for a 5-4 lead.

Corcoran came on in relief in the fifth and retired all nine batters he faced with four strikeouts, including the final two batters of the game. Norwich previously won the state title in 2000 and 2001.

Ages 9-10
Gm. 2: Westport Nat'l 6, Simsbury 3
VERNON , Aug. 6 -- Westport scored five runs in the second inning to seize command and take the state championship. Ryan Burke hit a two-RBI double while teammate Brendan Bernstein ripped a two-RBI single. Westport's Robert Gau made it 4-0 when he slid into home, colliding with Simsbury catcher P.J. Falvey, jarring the ball loose.

Trailing 5-0, Simsbury tried to rally in the third. They had runners on first and second base with no outs but grounded into two outs. One run scored on an error before Weer registered a strikeout to end the threat. Derek Amboyan's RBI single in the fourth gave Westport a 6-1 lead. Simsbury loaded the bases with none out in the sixth thanks to a singles from Troy Coombes and Ryan Wollert and a hit batter. But Westport hurler David Speer got the next two batters to pop up and the final batter to ground out to secure the win.

Gm. 1: Westport National 6, Simsbury 1
VERNON, Aug. 5 -- Westport National scored five unanswered runs and received a complete-game performance from pitcher Robert Gau to take game 1. David Speer had an RBI double for 1-0 lead in the first inning but Simsbury tied the game thanks to a pair of walks, a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. But Westport regained the lead in the fourth on a RBI single from Ryan Burke. Westport broke it open in the fifth. With runners on second and third, Brendan Bernstein scored from third on a fielder's choice. Luke Feldman added another run on another fielder's choice.

Major Division state final
Gm. 3: Mystic 9, Seymour 1
ORANGE, July 22 -- Mystic scored four runs in the first inning and five in the fifth to win its second straight game and claim the Major Division state championship. "They gave us some chances and we took them right away. We shook their confidence," Mystic manager Mark Latham told the New London Day . Mystic scored all four of its first inning runs with two outs. Seymour made two errors and Mystic's Hannah Hallissey hit a two-run single to cap off the scoring.

Mystic pitcher Aubrey Latham, who lost in game 1, went the distance, allowing only one run on three hits. She retired the side in order in three of six innings. All three hits came with less than two outs and two of three were left on base. Latham struck out three and walked three. Lathan had an RBI single along with Brittany Duclos hitting an RBI double. Alissa Downy also had a double for Mystic.

Gm. 1: Seymour 4, Mystic 2
ORANGE, July 20 -- Seymour pitcher Meryl Ragaini went the distance, allowing only five hits as Seymour got some key hits and played sharp defensively to take game 1 of the best-of-3 state final with a 4-2 victory over Mystic at Stankye Field. Alyssa Zaprazalka's RBI triple in the fourth made it 4-0.

Seymour took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Kelly O'Connell scored the first of her two runs on a Mystic throwing error.

Mystic scored twice in the fourth inning when Arielle Cooper scored on a wild pitch and Kristen Wheeler singled home Brittany Duclos. Briana McAulife pitched a complete game for Mystic, striking out six and walking seven.

The game also featured a pair of defensive standouts in Seymour rightfielder Kristen Greco, who made three diving catches, and Duclos, the Mystic shortstop.
Trailing 5-2 going into the its last at-bat, Seymour loaded the bases with one out and then watch O'Connell blast a ball to center. But Mystic CF Arie Woods tracked down the ball and sent a quick relay back into Mystic P Brittany McAullife, who wheeled and caught Greco off third base for a double play to end the game. Mystic also caught a runner napping off third in the first inning. Erin Cochran had an RBI single in the fifth for Seymor.

"We made the plays. We had some great fielding plays," Mystic manager Mark Latham told the New London Day. "Sunday night they were a little flat, but tonight you could tell there was a big difference. We were a lot more loose."

Gm. 2: Mystic 5, Seymour 3
ORANGE, July 21 -- Strong fielding and some clutch hitting lifted Mystic to a 5-3 win. Mystic's Stacy Pouliot hit a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to put Mystic ahead to stay.

Gm.
