Major Division Gm. 3: No. Stamford 8, Guilford 3 THOMASTON, July 30 -- North Stamford exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to top Guilford to win the Connecticut Major Division (ages 11-12) Little League state championship at Reeves Field. North Stamford won the best-of-3 series, 2-1.
North Branford took an early 3-0 in the second inning on RBI single from Pat Green and pitcher T.J. Hickey and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Weir that scored Sean Mullins. Guilford closed the gap in the third inning thanks a two-run home run from Dustin Miconi. But Hickey, who allowed five hits and fanned six, handcuffed Guilford for the remainder of the game. In the pivotal fifth inning, Mullins had a two-run double while Hickey (3-for-3) had a run-scoring single for North Stamford. Green and J.J. Descrescenzo also had RBIs in the inning.
"(North Stamford) made the plays and got it done in the fifth. I'm hoping to be able to get up to Bristol to cheer our state champions on," Guilford coach Mark Donovan told the New Haven Register.
Gm. 2: Guilford 10, North Stamford 3 THOMASTON, July 29 -- Guilford pitcher Mike Pavelko allowed only five hits, one earned runs and fanned eight as Guilford tied up the series at 1-1. Pavelko shut down an explosive North Stamford offense with his consistent mix of hard fastballs and an occasional change-up.
Pavelko had an RBI single while Dennis McGinley added a two-run double to give Guilford an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. North Stamford cut the lead to 3-1 on a run-scoring double by Brandon Weir in the bottom of the first. It tied the game in the fourth when T.J. Hickey scored on a passed ball and a Tom Dolan single scored pinch runner Rich Pucci.
Guilford, however, rallied for six runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Pavelko and a bases-loaded double by Steve Hall. Hall also singled to score Pavelko in the sixth for Guilford's final run.
Gm. 1: No. Stamford 10, Guilford 0 (5) THOMASTON, July 27 -- T.J. Hickey hit a first-inning two-run home run and Bobby Horn pitched a three-hitter as North Stamford won 10-0 in five innings at Reeves Field in game 1. They got a run in the second on a run-scoring single by J.J. Decrescenzo and two more in the third to lead 5-0. Sean Mullins hit a two-run single and Horn added a run-scoring single as part of a five-run fifth inning.
Junior Division Final: Norwich 5, South Windsor 4 SOUTH WINDSOR, July 27 -- Norwich erased a four-run deficit with a two-out rally in the fifth inning as Norwich won the state Junior baseball championship for the third time in four years with a 5-4 win over South Windsor. "We just pulled the rabbit out of the hat again," Norwich manager Don Murray told the Norwich Bulletin. South Windsor led 4-0 after three innings and 4-1 in the fifth. In the first game of the tournament, South Windsor led 7-0 before Norwich rallied to eventually win, 8-7 in eight innings.
Norwich cut the lead to 4-1 in the fourth when Tyler Turgeon hit one of his three doubles, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Danny Eagan. In the fifth inning, South Windsor should have been out of the inning but Chris Blanchard reached first base on an error. Josh Murray followed with a single to center, Turgeon hit an RBI double and Corey Corcoran had an RBI single. Turgeon scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Kyle Wilson grounded to second base but there was an error and Corcoran scored from second base, beating the second basesman's throw home by sliding around the catcher's tag for a 5-4 lead.
Corcoran came on in relief in the fifth and retired all nine batters he faced with four strikeouts, including the final two batters of the game. Norwich previously won the state title in 2000 and 2001.
Ages 9-10 Gm. 2: Westport Nat'l 6, Simsbury 3 VERNON , Aug. 6 -- Westport scored five runs in the second inning to seize command and take the state championship. Falvey, jarring the ball loose.
Trailing 5-0, Simsbury tried to rally in the third. They had runners on first and second base with no outs but grounded into two outs.
