TORRINGTON, July 6, 2002 -- The inability to make the routine defensive plays continue to haunt the Twisters in a 7-2 loss to Sanford, which rapped out 10 hits. The Twisters (10-11) lost for the fifth time in the last seven games despite doubles from Jeff Hourigan and Wick Udy. Sanford took a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a pair of Twister errors and a passed ball. Sanford's Cory Lizarraga extended his hitting streak to 12 games on a very questionable hit in the first inning. Exhibition: Team USA 21, Twisters 2 TORRINGTON, July 5, 2002 -- Facing American pitching for the first time in over a week, the USA Baseball National Team pounded out 21 runs on 24 hits, scoring at least one run in eight of nine innings, as they cruised to a 21-2 victory over the Twisters Friday night.
Team USA's Aaron Hill (Louisiana State) went 5-for-7 with five RBI and four runs scored - becoming the first USA national team player to collect five hits in a game since Jason Tyner accomplished the feat in 1997. Hill becomes the first national team player to get five hits in a game, while using a wood bat. The team total of 24 hits in the game was the second highest total by Team USA in history, falling just one short of the all-time high set in 1988 against Spain.
Torrington starter Jason Jones was racked for seven runs on ten hits in just three innings, taking the loss. Jeff Hourigan was the offensive start for Torrington, as he went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and both RBI's. The Twisters allowed an unearned run in the fourth and six more in the sixth that put the game out of reach.
Game 20: Twisters 8, Lowell 5 LOWELL, Mass., July 4, 2002 -- Catcher Wick Udy was 2-for-2 with a career-high three RBI as the Twistere rallied from a three-run deficit to beat Lowell, 8-5 Thursday night. The Twisters (10-10) snapped a three-game losing streak, taking advantage of five Lowell errors, scoring six unearned runs. Pitcher Jeff Hourigan earned his first NECBL victory, striking out eight, walking two and allowing two earned runs. He scattered seven hits over seven innings. Udy had a double and triple. Lowell's L.J. Demaino was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Newport's Adam Tidball was 4-for-4 with three RBI, including a pair of doubles. Lou Ferrell and Blake Rutkowski each had doubles for the Twisters, who were held to only six hits. Torrington cut Newport's five-run lead to one with a four-run seventh inning but the Gulls added two more in the seventh and another run in the eighth to ice the win. Giampaolo, who played in 13 games for the Twisters in 2001, pitched eight innings and scattered eight hits to earn his first NECBL win. He struck out two and walked none.

Game 17: Danbury 4, Twisters 3 TORRINGTON, June 30, 2002 -- A late Twisters rally fell short as Torrington (9-8) couldn't catch Danbury Sunday night at Fuessenich Park. The Danbury (8-7) win leaves both teams in first place on the NECBL's Western Division. Danbury took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning but the Twisters rallied for a pair of runs to cut the lead to one. Danbury took a 4-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning thanks to a walk, passed ball and a balk from reliever Jeff Hourigan.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jordan Czarniecki, in his final Twister appearance, doubled with one out, went to third on a single by Mike Sokol (2-for-4) and scored on a throwing error. But with one out and a runner on first, Hourigan hit into a double play to end the game. ... Danbury Jeff Frazier of Rutgers, the ex Toms River, N.J., Little League star, hit a two-run home run to left-field blast lifting Danbury into a 3-0 lead.
