Game 3: Waterford South 4, Seymour 0

Waterford South 4, Seymour 0
ROCKY HILL, July 25 – Pitcher Kelli Connors allowed only three hits and struck out eight as Waterford South topped Seymour, 4-0 to win its second state title in the last five years. Waterford South also won in 2002. Sage Bagewell gave Waterford a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the third inning. A walk, wild pitch and error scored another run in the fourth. Tricia Haire had an RBI single in the fifth and Waterford South added a fourth run on an error.

Seymour threatened in the third taking advantage of three walks to load the bases with two outs. But a ground ball to Connors ended the inning. “These guys are tough, they've been resilient all year, they made the plays when they had to make the plays,” Waterford South coach Don Connors told the New London Day. “I never doubted them.” Kelly Mitchell, Stephanie Burt and Shelby Betts each had hits for Seymour.

Seymour 6, Waterford South 4
ROCKY HILL, July 23 -- Seymour took advantage of two Waterford errors and scored six runs in the third inning to beat Waterford South, 6-4, to force a deciding game 3. Kim Ferris and Shelby Betts each had a two-out, two-RBI single for Seymour. Kate Sykora had an RBI triple for Waterford South while Sage Bagwell added a RBI double. Seymour squashed a late Waterford rally in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Waterford loaded the bases on two singles, a walk and an error. They scored two runs but Seymour ended the game by throwing out a runner at home.

Waterford South 6, Seymour 5 (8)
ROCKY HILL, July 21 – Despite giving up five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Waterford South rallied to beat Seymour, 6-5 in eight innings and take game one of the best-of-3 championship series. Kelli Connors RBI single scored Tricia Haire with the game-winning run.

“We were cruising along,” Waterford South coach Don Connors told the New London Day. “I think we just got complacent.” Seymour tied the game in the fifth, scoring five runs on two hits, tour walks and three errors. Still, Waterford made the plays with pitcher Kelli Connors picking a runner off third base in the fifth and then striking out the next two batters to end the rally. Sage Bagwell had two hits for Waterford while Jess Ryder had an RBI triple. Stephanie Burt had a two-RBI single for Seymour.

Connecticut Big League
Softball (ages 16-18)
State Championship
District 5, with 11 of 15 girls from Bristol,  was the only league to enter a team so they qualified for the Eastern Regionals in West Haven on August 4-10. District 4 also entered a team for being the host of the tournament.

District 5 qualifies for World Series
WEST HAVEN, Aug. 11 -- Only two Connecticut districts fielded Big League softball All-Star teams (ages 16-18) in 2006 but both managed to play in the East Region final. State champion District 5 beat host District 4 to earn a spot in the World Series in Michigan. Eleven of the 15 players on the team played high school softball in Bristol and eight who have earned All-State honors.

Breanne Gleason (Bristol Central), Audrey Boutin (Bristol Eastern), Sara Plourde (Bristol Eastern), Kim Church (Farmington), Kayla Jandreau (Plainville) and Lena Cantone (Southington) were All-State this spring. Davina Hernandez (UMass) was All-State at Bristol Central in 2005 while Farmington’s Cara Hovhanessian (Tufts) was also All-State in 2005. Other Bristol area players include Amanda McPhee, Kim Curry, Chelsea Methot and Courtney Miller from Bristol Central; Melanie Bush and Sara Krolikowski from Bristol Eastern; and Laura Riccio from St. Paul.

"With the talent that we have, (reaching the World Series) was what was expected," District 5 manager Dave Gleason told the Bristol Press. "This team is as good as any team I’ve seen," he added. "Their drive matches their talent in terms of how good this team is."

In the East Regional tournament, District 5 was undefeated (4-0) while District 4 went 3-1. D5 won its semifinal over New Jersey, 12-2 while D4 won its semifinal over Maryland, 2-1. In the best of three championship series, District 5 improved to 7-0 by sweeping District 4 by scores of 8-0 and 6-0.

Wallingford 20, Rocky Hill 8
WALLINGFORD, July 25 – Wallingford avenged an one-run loss in the opening round of the tournament to win its first state Minor Division (ages 10-11) state championship with a 20-8 win over Rocky Hill, playing in the finals for the second straight year. In the tournament opener, Rocky Hill nipped Wallingford, 5-4. A year ago, Bristol won a best-of-3 final with Rocky Hill by a 2-1 margin.

Wallingford took an early 7-0 lead in the first on seven walks, two wild pitches and a hit batter. “A lot of our success came down to pitching and a lot of it came down to listening,” Wallingford coach Joe Barbiuto told the Meriden Record Journal. “Our pitching was great and we played smart softball. We told them to wait until (Rocky Hill’s) pitcher threw a strike to start their at-bat.” Rocky Hill trimmed the lead to one, 8-7, in the fourth but Wallingford responded with 12 runs in the fifth to ice the contest. Kim Clark had two singles and an RBI in the fifth while Jessica Pereira and Cassie Acampora had RBI singles.

Ron Bernardini scored three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead but Glastonbury, playing in its first state final since 1993, rallied. Reliever Dave Kravies retired the final nine batters to secure the win. For Hamden, Mike Franco had a two-RBI single while C.J. Carignan had a RBI double.

On the mound, he scattered six hits and struck out five. Tied at 1-1, Glastonbury's James Longley reached on a bunt single and scampered to third on an infield single from Steve Michalek. Then, Mainuli hit his homer. "I knew something would come up," Glastonbury coach Tracy Michaelek told the Hartford Courant. "We've had a lot of late-game heroics. This team just fights to the very end."

Ron Bernardini 4, Glastonbury Amer. 3
HADDAM, July 29 – Matt Franco’s RBI double in the top of the seventh was the game-winner for Ron Bernardini-Hamden in game 1 of the best-of-3 state championship series at Duval Field.
