WATERFORD, July 28 – Taking advantage of five Newington National errors, seven walks, two hit batters and four wild pitches, Shelton National rolled to a 9-1 victory and swept the best-of-3 series to win its second state championship. Pitcher Nick Petrovich pitched five innings, striking out eight and allowing three hits.
Ryan Testani had a two-RBI single in the first while Vinny Backert had a RBI double in the third. Jacob Lennertz had three RBI in the game as Shelton National built a 9-0 lead.
"They were very relaxed out there today," Shelton National manager Mark Testani told the New Haven Register. "Winning (game one on Friday) certainly helped. That gave us a little breathing room. But there were no jitters and everyone was very calm." Shelton National also won the state title in 1995. The Shelton Americans won the state title in 2000.
Gm 1: Shelton Nat'l 2, Newington Nat'l 1
WATERFORD, July 27 – Shelton National made an early two-run lead stand up to take game 1 of the best-of-3 state final with a 2-1 victory over Newington National on Friday. Shelton led 2-0 after two innings.
Matt Batten led off the game with a double and scored on a Nick Petrovich single. In the second, David Sanchez singled with two outs, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single by Tyler Tice. Shelton P David Sanchez allowed just six hits, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. "David, once again, came through," Shelton National manager Mark Testani told the New Haven Register. "He did what we needed. We didn’t give him a lot of support today at the plate but thank God we didn’t need much."
Newington threatened in the fourth. Matt Dean had a one-out RBI single and Nick Briganti reached on an error. Dean tried to score from second on a single from Jorge Premto but was thrown out at home by outfielder Nick Petrovich. Newington did cut the lead with an RBI single from Zachery Hedberg. Newington P Nick Briganti, who gave up seven hits in the first two innings, allowed just two hits in the final four innings.
"We just did not have it tonight," Newington manager Walt Gwisc told the New Britain Herald. "There's always one game where, for some reason, the kids just aren't there... It doesn't mean they don't want to win, it's just a funky attitude. The good thing about that is, I've never seen it happen two nights in a row."
