Waterford South 1, Bristol 0
EAST HAMPTON, July 20 – Katelyn Huff’s RBI double in the fifth inning lifted Waterford South to its third straight state championship with a 1-0 win over Bristol in game 3. Kelley Dugan scored from second base.

Bristol rallied in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs on a pair of infield singles and a walk. But Waterford P Megan Spellman struck out the side to end the threat. She struck out 12 and allowed just three hits. “(Assistant coach) Gregg (Swanson) and I were talking before the game and we knew it would be one run,” Waterford manager Denise Spellman told the New London Day. “We just hoped it would be ours. ... How about Megan getting out of bases loaded, no outs? Are you kidding me? That was great. Megan pitched a great game.”

Waterford South 5, Bristol 0
EAST HAMPTON, July 18 -- Waterford South’s Megan Spellman struck out 12 and allowed just two hits as Waterford took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 championship series with a 5-0 win over previously undefeated Bristol (10-1). "She's been doing a great job. She goes out there every day and does the best she can do," Waterford South manager Denise Spellman told the Bristol Press. "They all work very hard, and we actually have a lot of fun doing it, too."

Waterford South scored one run in the second inning when Elaina Sullivan walked and later came home on a groundout by Kelsey Matthews. They added a second run in the third inning when Marisa Boch bunted for a leadoff single and came around on an RBI single by Spellman. Megan Elphick was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Four errors hurt Bristol, which never advanced a runner past second base.

P Tyler Tice struck out 9 and scattered two hits over six innings for Shelton. Plainville 5, Ellington 3
TOLLAND, July 29 – After having its seven-game winning streak stopped on Monday night, Plainville (8-1) scored five runs in the first two innings and held on to beat Ellington to win the state title. Ellington left 11 men on base, leaving the bases loaded once and leaving two men on base on four other occasions. “You can’t score three runs and expect to win a state tournament game,” Ellington manager Brian Janiga told the Journal Inquirer. “We were averaging nine or 10 runs a game up to this game. We just didn’t make the most of our opportunities.”

Plainville led 2-0 after one inning and 5-0 after two. Pitchers Tom Dinda and Branden Dalena combined to limit Ellington just five hits. For Plainville, Nick Moshier had three hits and scored two runs. Ellington’s Mike Cleary came into the game in the second inning in relief of starter Jake Gagne and pitched well. He allowed three hits, no runs, and didn’t walk a batter. Cleary had two of Ellington’s five hits.

Game 1: Burlington 7, Fairfield Nat'l 3
SHELTON, July 25 – Trent Kowalec had an RBI single, a double and scored 3 runs as Burlington beat Fairfield National, 7-3 in game 1 of the state finals. Burlington took a quick 2-0 lead in the first on a RBI single from Ben Lewis and a wild pitch.

Fairfield threatened in the first and loaded the bases with one out after a pair of walks. But P Chris Davis struck out the next two batters to escape the jam. "I think that really got the whole team fired up,” Burlington coach Ray Kowalec told the Bristol Press. We were a little nervous when we came out so for him to do that really settled us down." Davis went 3 2/3 innings, striking out five and scattering five hits.

In the fourth, Burlington send 10 men to the plate and scored four runs to extend its lead to 7-0. Davis ripped a two-RBI single to centerfield to extend the lead to 5-0. Davis scored on a sacrifice fly from Justin Gallicchio and Trent Kowalec scored on a RBI single from Jacob Roberts. "Our hitters are really patient at the plate. That's what we've been trying to teach them," coach Kowalec said. "That usually allows us to have a big inning."

Burlington 11, Fairfield National 3
SHELTON, July 26 – P Justin Gallicchio struck out six and walked none over five innings to lead Burlington an 11-3 win over Fairfield National and the state championship. He scattered seven runs and allowed three runs over five innings.

Burlington took a 3-0 lead in the second inning with a two-out rally. After a walk to Gallicchio, Ben Czamecki, Evan Sokol, Jordon Sokol and Shea Tracy each had consecutive singles.

Burlington led 5-2 after three innings and blew the game open in the fourth. A walk, an error and a single by Zac Stefanski loaded the bases with one out. After a strikeout and a wild pitch that allowed one run to score, Trent Kowalec ripped a two-RBI single for a 8-2 lead. Gallicchio had a RBI double to extend the lead to 9-2.

"I've never seen a team with this much desire and determination," Burlington Ray Kowalec told the Bristol Press. "They started on a mission to win, not just for the sake of winning but because they knew that they had to continue to win to keep playing baseball. These kids just love playing baseball."
